Chapter 8

As the shrill sound of the whistle pierced the air, my heart skipped a beat and I felt beads of sweat forming on my forehead before we’d even started. The moment had arrived, and The Gauntlet was officially underway. With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I followed Tina, wasting no time in dashing toward the first obstacle, the cargo net.

The net was suspended several feet off the ground, swaying slightly as the four of us hit it in unison. It looked deceptively simple, but its intricacies became evident as we approached. The net was tight, and the holes between the ropes were just large enough for a foot or hand to fit through. I cursed myself for wearing proper shoes instead of trainers, unlike the two women and Joe, but I’d just have to manage.

Somehow, I took the lead, cautiously placing my foot onto the rung after rung of the net and gripping the ropes with both hands. Kim followed closely behind me, mirroring my movements. I could feel the eyes of the three men and two women, our challengers, their gaze like an electric charge in the air as they gathered below us next to a series of crash mats. The mats must be there to break our fall, should we somehow slip off.

Climbing the cargo net was a test of balance and coordination. Each step required careful consideration, as one misstep could send us tumbling into the arms of our challengers. As we ascended, the net swayed beneath our weight, adding an extra layer of challenge to the task.

Tina and Joe were right behind us, their movements equally cautious. The four of us navigated the cargo net in silence, save for the faint creaking of the ropes and the sound of our breaths.

Reaching the top of the cargo net felt like an accomplishment in itself. Tina was ahead of me as I climbed onto the raised platform, and then we both stopped, catching our breath and exchanging knowing glances. Ahead of us lay the next obstacle, two wide balance beams with crash mats beneath, that we needed to traverse to continue our journey through the challenge.

I took a deep breath and made my way onto the first beam as Tina took her place on the other. My palms were sweaty as I placed one foot in front of the other, cautiously making my way forward. Kim followed suit behind me and I turned to see determination in her eyes.

Joe was close behind Tina on the other beam, and I could hear their encouraging words to each other as they navigated the obstacle. Then Joe saw me looking and called out that we were doing great. We might be competing here together, but we were all in this together, facing the obstacles and the lurking challengers as a united front.

But then Kim shouted something from behind me and I stopped to ask her what she’d said but too late. Something hit me on the side of the head
